How to Talk to Kids Before a Divorce
When you are speaking to your child about divorce, you need to keep it real. You have to be honest with them and not critical of your spouse. You have to be open and make them feel that you have the love and support for them as you always have. This will make it much easier on the child and on you as well. Most of the children want to know why their life is being turned upside down. It will depend on the age of the child and the reason for the divorce and this may require more than just a little talking. When a child is maturing, they will want to have more information on all topics especially one like this.
You need to make your conversation with them about divorce as productive as you can. They have to understand that you and your spouse think that this is the best decision possible for their family to make everyone feel happy. Even though it may not seem happy now, it will get better.
You should use these following suggestions when you are talking about divorce to your children:
* You should make plans to sit with your child together and let them know of the changes that are coming in their life. Let them know what is going on and help them to understand.
* Make sure that your child knows that both parents no matter what love them. This will help to calm their fears and keep them feeling safe and secure like you want them to.
* Be respectful of your spouse and other family members when giving reasons for the divorce.
* Let the child know that this is not their fault and that they should not worry about anything at all.
* Make sure that you are emotionally there for your child. You have to let them know that they can come and talk to you about anything and that you will work it all out together to make sure that they are happy and healthy always.
When you are using the right techniques and talking to your children, you will decrease the chance at your child being emotionally scarred by the divorce. You want them to feel comfortable and know that they are loved no matter what and that this is not their fault and they cannot do anything about it. Let them know that they will have their family on their side and that they can always count on you to be there for them and answer any questions that they may have. This will help them to feel more secure with the divorce that is going on around them.
