Keeping New Year Resolutions - Step Nine - Check Your Progress

Life changes every day and keeping a New Years resolution may mean that you have to adjust your plans. As you take more and more steps, you will be making more changes than you are used to making. That is fine.

As you do new things and take more action, it becomes very important to check your progress and make sure you are heading in the right direction. It is like taking a long airplane trip from Los Angeles, California to New York City.

If the pilot is not watching or the auto pilot is not working, a simple one degree change in direction can result in being a hundred or more miles away from the airport when it is time to land.

As you check your progress on a regular basis, you are developing a habit that will keep you motivated and focused. Without doing a checkup, you may forget your goal, get distracted and give up on your New Years resolution. Here are a few simple tips and questions to ask yourself when you are doing that check up.

1. Read your written resolution every day, and either silently or out loud several times. If you can do that several times a day, all the better.

2. Notice your activity level. Are you backsliding? Are you stuck? Be honest in assessing your activity. Nothing happens until you take action.

3. What is the obstacle that is right in front of you that is stopping you from moving forward? How can you go under or around it? Find out what others have done and adjust your plans to get back on track.

4. What have you run into that is unexpected? Life is full of unexpected events - an injury, pregnancy, job change, or death in the family. Simply release the current situation and stress using relaxing meditation, prayer or a visualization.

When you take the time to check your progress, you are telling your subconscious mind that your goal is worth your time and attention. That alone can help propel you on toward success.

When you reach Step Ten, your mindset will have shifted to becoming a person of action.
