Keeping New Year Resolutions - Step Seven - Overcome Obstacles
You are on the road toward reaching your goal and making strides in your journey to keeping your New Years resolution. Then, a detour interrupts you. You get a flat tire, the engine overheats. Whatever might have started out to be a smooth road has turned into a rutted highway.
Obstacles, problems, hassles and disappointments -- whatever you call them -- are the "testing ground" of any progress in life. Success experts call this going beyond the comfort zone or hitting the "terror barrier" - the "old" part of you that just does not want to change.
Creating positive change involves changing thinking and emotional patterns, which then affect behavior and how we act. Growth does involve struggle but that struggle does not have to be avoided.
So anticipate that if you want to overcome the obstacles and achieve your resolution, there is will be another part of your thinking that will cause you to make any excuse to quit, to give up, relax and just take it easy, or to go back to the way it used to be.
You are going to have to deal with roadblocks and having a strategy to do that makes sense. If your new resolution were really easy, you would already be doing it. The fact is that there will be problems along the way. If you have to get up early to exercise or write, your thinking will try to convince you to roll over and stay in bed. Just get out of bed and put on your work out clothes.
That is where you can make the difference by taking a small step to stay on track. Remember, when in Step 4 you created your detailed plan, you broke it down into small steps. When you feel the need to quit, think of taking just that small next step.
Any progress, even if it seems small, can help you switch on the momentum to moving forward toward keeping your New Years resolution. As you move forward, using positive reinforcement in Step 8, can take away the drudgery of grinding it out.
